Who are the Magi? How did they know about Jesus? What's the deal with all the gifts? At first glance, these questions can seem unknown or even unimportant. But a closer look actually reveals a core aspect of who Jesus is and what he came to do. In this mini-series, we are exploring various moments in the birth of Christ and how Jesus was introduced to the world.

2 Samuel 7.
Welcome to one of the most important chapters in your Bible. This moment in Scripture gives us a window into the heart of God for his people for all of eternity. What happens here impacts everything! In 2 Samuel 7, God promises a new King and a new Kingdom to come. This King will rule and reign with God's people in God's final Kingdom forever. From this moment on, the entire narrative will shift. The people of God begin to long for this King from God. When he comes, the first thing he declares is, "repent, for the KINGDOM of God is here." The King has come and is inviting all people into his Kingdom forever.

S3 E13: David in the Cave

Monday Dec 02, 2024

Monday Dec 02, 2024

1 Samuel 18-31.
After his calling to be king and courage in defeating Goliath, you would think David's life would only be marked by victory and favor. And yet, shortly after his early successes, David is met with ongoing struggles in his story. Through no fault of his own, David will spend a lengthy season in the caves of the wilderness hiding from King Saul. It is in this season that God trains David to grow in his dependency on the LORD. In this episode we explore David in the cave and what to do when life does not go according to plan. Where many of us are tempted to spiral inward or control outward, David goes upward to God. In the midst of our own seasons of discouragement, depression, and despair, we can bring all that we are before God knowing that God is always there.

1 Samuel 16-17.
What gives you Christlike courage? In this episode, we look at the calling of David and the courage he displayed as he defeated Goliath.  In the opening scenes of his story, we see a young man marked by fearless faith and Christlike courage. But that courage did not come from himself, but rather from God. So the point of the story is not "be like David" but rather "we need a David." The good news is that we have a David who truly battled sin and death for us. It is through his victory that we have victory. David is only a shadow of the greater David to come: Jesus.

1 Samuel 9-31.
Here comes the King! So far in the narrative, God has been the good and wonderful King of his people. But his people did not want God as their King, but rather wanted "a King like the rest of the nations." So God gives the best humanity has to offer, Saul. And where Saul looked good on the outside, he is ungodly on the inside. His life was not marked by faith in God, but fear in man. It is easy to look at the "Sauls" around us, but this passage forces us to face the "Saul" within us. We are all guilty of elevating ourselves or others above God. But it is only when God comes down that we actually see the King our hearts were made for.

Although this lesson is directed at those with ministry in mind, the principles apply to anyone who wants to grow in leading like (and with) Jesus.
This is audio pulled from a video class with Storyverse Institute. This program takes the best of seminary and makes it simple for all. S3 E10: A tale of 3 kings

Monday Nov 11, 2024

Monday Nov 11, 2024

Saul. David. Solomon.
So far in the story, God has been king over his people. He is a God who radically gives to an undeserving people his grace and kindness as he loves and leads them. And yet, his own people will call for a king, "like the rest of the nations." Although these kings represent the best humanity has to offer, each will fall short of being a righteous king over God's people. Where God gives, these kings take. Seeing these kings is meant to make us long for a better King, Jesus.

1 Samuel 4-8.
In this episode, we explore a unique story in Scripture where God saved his people through the Ark of the Covenant. Here we see that God is a God who saves. But will his people receive salvation from him and submit to him as King? When we treat God like an object to be used (the way the Israelites did), we miss the beautiful reality that he is a person to be loved and followed.

1 Samuel 1-3.
How does God speak today? Does he? How do we discern the voice of God in our own lives? In the opening chapters of 1 Samuel, God is speaking, but his people are dull of hearing. In this episode, we explore what can we learn from the people of God then in order to better listen to the voice of God now. God is a God who speaks, but are his people listening?

Ruth.
What do you do when faced with uncertainty in life? Whether the world at large or the world right in front of you? Ruth tells a story of faithfulness in the midst of chaos and crisis. Her story is really our story when a "kinsman redeemer" takes her from death to life.
